From the changing leaves to the shorter, cooler days, fall can make us feel ready for change, renewal, and to switch things up. When it comes to your running routine, there are a few things to help you keep things exciting, stay on track with your goals, and enjoy everything fall has to offer.
1. Find a new route
Here in Michigan and the Midwest, we love to go leaf peeping! A great way to get your fix of the stunning fall colors and changing leaves is to venture off your normal running path! Find a local trail, woods, park, or pathway to try out. A change in scenery does the soul good, even if you stay on the pavement and change up your route.
2. Practice safety in the dark
The days are getting shorter, so your pre- and post-work runs are likely going to either start or end in darkness. It's important to keep yourself protected in the dark. For one, oncoming vehicles may not be able to see you, so wear bright colors and reflective gear. Additionally, carrying pepper spray, a personal alarm (like the Birdie), sharing your route with a loved one, and wearing open-ear headphones are all ways to stay alert and prepared.
3. Don't skip the SPF
Summer's over, so it's not hot anymore and the sun isn't as unforgiving. That said, UV rays still cause sunburn, accelerated aging, discoloration, and even skin cancer. This Neutrogena Sport Sunscreen has an SPF of 70+ and has an oil-free formula, making it perfect for your face.
4. Replace your shoes
I recommend replacing your shoes every 300-500 miles, which is around 6 months for most people. Check on the state of your tred (the underside of your shoes). Wear and tear can lead to a lack of support, more aches and pains than usual, and a lack of traction. Fallen leaves, when wet, can be extremely slippery, so it's best to replace your shoes before you slip and fall!
