Whether you are an avid athlete or committed to a stand-all-day job (or both!), heel pain and other chronic sources of foot pain can be major obstacles to your mobility and motivation.
Fortunately, many ways exist to address these forms of pain, no matter how long you have been experiencing them. Most don’t even end up requiring surgical intervention!
One such form of advanced, non-invasive treatment that we are proud to deliver here at Freeland Foot & Ankle Clinic is Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology, or EPAT.
What is EPAT?
EPAT is a technological treatment that uses ranges and frequencies of pressure waves to stimulate the body’s own natural healing process.
Our EPAT machine is capable of directing pulses of low-to-high-pressure waves through body and into the site of heel or foot pain. This provides an aggravating kind of effect at the area, and can produce a few positive consequences:
- The body responds to the aggravation by activating cellular repair activities in damaged cells. This can help speed healing already occurring or “jumpstart” healing in more chronic cases.
- Blood flow to the area increases, providing an increase of oxygen and other healing factors to the cells that need it most.
- Immune response to the area increases which, along with increased circulation, can help decrease inflammation.
This treatment tends to be carried out over several scheduled sessions for maximum results, although many patients tend to report noticeable relief after just their first appointment.
Who Can EPAT Help?
EPAT can be a very useful option for active people who are suffering from soft tissue injuries such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis. It can help accelerate healing and reduce inflammation, getting athletes back to doing what they love sooner and safer.
It is also a potentially good form of treatment for patients who have been experiencing pain for some time, due to the capabilities of rekindling healing responses in the area.
We will of course conduct a full evaluation of your condition and provide our best recommendations on the treatment methods that may be best for your situation and specific needs.
How Would I Prepare for EPAT?
There is really not much you need to do to prepare for EPAT treatments. There are no dietary requirements or fasting. No injections of any type are involved, either.
One element you should know beforehand, however, is that there may be some discomfort involved with the procedure itself. The good news is that we can adjust the level of the treatment so that it remains within a threshold you can accept. Higher levels tend to be more effective, but we can work with you to gradually build it up over sessions in a way that doesn’t cause you too much discomfort.
You Have Options for Handling Heel and Foot Pain
Even if you have tried one or two ways of dealing with your pain in the past, only to find no results, that does not mean your hopes are sunk. Far from it! All it takes in the vast majority of cases is knowing exactly what’s at the core of the problem—and that’s what we do!
