Heel Pain

You might not necessarily think of heel pain as a “sports injury,” but it’s definitely a problem for many athletes! Lots of activity can overstress the arches, which cause them to pull and tear against the heel—leading to plantar fasciitis. Additionally, children and teenagers are susceptible to Sever’s disease, a heel pain condition resulting from injury to the vulnerable growth plate of the heel bone.

Ankle Sprains

Twisted, rolled, and sprained ankles are definitely the most common traumatic sports injury—not just to the lower limbs, but overall. While mild, grade I sprains may still allow you to bear some weight and can often be treated at home, it’s still important to get expert advice and follow a treatment plan carefully. Improper treatment of a sprain can lead to chronic, arthritic pain—not to mention joint instability and greatly increased risk of re-injury.

Achilles Tendon Injuries

The Achilles tendon connects the large, powerful calf muscles to the ankle and heel, so it has to deal with sudden and explosive forces almost constantly. This can lead to swelling, inflammation, or small tears in the tendon fibers (as in Achilles tendinitis), or in severe cases a partial or complete rupture of the tendon.

Bone Fractures

A lot of the time, broken bones are the result of a single, sudden, violent impact—with broken toes and broken ankles being particularly common. But this isn’t the only way bones break. Another common injury we deal with is stress fractures, which occur when small, repetitive impacts over a longer period of time cause cracks to form in the outer surface of the bone.

This is only a partial list. Other conditions we see on a regular basis include toe sprains (turf toe), shin splints, muscle strains, and many others.
